UIndy’s Center for Aging & Community is known for its research, advocacy and education on issues related to aging, but this spring CAC is delving into the new field of … musical theater?
Yes, as part of the center’s ongoing 10th anniversary celebration, it has commissioned an original stage production by the Phoenix Theatre. Forever Sung: A Celebration of Age in Song runs May 18-26 and June 1-3.
Described as “a live musical concert that celebrates every age of our lives,” the production explores the seasons of life through the music of Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell, Cat Stevens, Nina Simone, John Mayer, Taylor Swift and many other popular recording artists.
Associate Professor Sharon Baggett conceived the idea after seeing the Phoenix’s acclaimed production Pure Prine, which celebrated the work of singer-songwriter John Prine with an ensemble cast that used only songs, no dialogue, to convey a story. Forever Sung takes a similar approach and includes some of the same performers, including longtime Indianapolis musician Tim Brickley, who shares the writing credits with Phoenix producing director Bryan Fonseca.
“I just wanted to have the conversation about aging in a different way,” says Baggett, who sold the idea to Fonseca and worked with Brickley to select the songs. “Music touches you in a different way than through your rational mind.”
Rounding out the cast are Tim Grimm, Ken Ferrell, Max Henschen, Jan Lucas, Heather Styka and Sherri Brown Webster. Tickets are $25.
